Congratulations! You’ve made it through the three prevailing myths about CrossFit that keep people out of our gym and sidelined on their road to fitness.

What is CrossFit?

In the CrossFit industry, we say it is “Constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity.” For the uninitiated, it is, quite simply, the perfect fitness regime for any committed individual, regardless of age or experience. Every movement can be adapted to fit any fitness level, so no one needs to be intimidated. All of our CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, in other words, movements that mimic the core movements of life. We combine cardio such as running, rowing, biking, and jumping rope, with weightlifting and bodyweight exercises. We use barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, medicine balls, boxes, and a list of other toys every day. These elements are mixed into innumerable combinations and create the core of our daily workouts. Each class is an hour long and typically includes a warm-up, skill and strength development, conditioning, and mobility. We take the guesswork out of it all, so you can focus on becoming the best version of “you” that you possibly can.

Myth 1: “I have to get in shape first”

False! Do you think that in order to go to the doctor you need to get healthy first? Do you think that in order to go to a restaurant you should eat first? Of course not! Despite what you see on TV or what advertising tells you, even professional CrossFit athletes started at the beginning. If you feel like you need to get in shape, great! Our gym is the best place to do that. Even if you haven’t worked out in years, come on in! We will meet you where you are at in your fitness journey and we will help you get started, even if it is at the very beginning.

Myth 2: “CrossFit is dangerous. I’m going to get hurt”

False! Here at Helotes CrossFit our utmost priority is your safety. Every one of our coaches is 100% engaged in every class period. They are in tune with each of our athletes and their respective needs and limitations. From the very beginning of the warm-up each day, the coaches are watching for and correcting any improper form that could lead to injury. No athlete is ever encouraged to lift a weight or work at a pace that could cause harm. Our goal is to keep our athletes coming back day after day, and that begins with moving safely. Many of our athletes come in with previous injuries from other workouts, sports, or general wear-and-tear and often see drastic improvements in their performance because of the comprehensive nature of our program.

Myth 3: “CrossFit is too expensive”

False! We understand that CrossFit is an investment, but the way we look at it is it’s an investment in your quality of life. Fitness is the best insurance policy you can hold against illness, injury, and chronic disease. You are investing in a professional coaching staff who will know and understand you and your needs and help you meet your goals. You will not only gain physical fitness, but also self-confidence, mental grit, and fortitude. Plus, as an added bonus you will find a community who will come beside you to push you further than you ever expected you could go.
